Dear Glaciers,

I must profess my love to you, but awkwardly, I'm not sure where to begin or end. Do I start when I first met you at 17? The suddenness of being strapped to a bunch of strangers made into friends simply by gliding across your back. This trusting of my life to them and then later to you.

Or do I define our relationship by moments of overcoming cold, fear, or scientific roadblocks? Is hauling a golfbag full of snow up a mountain really a poignant sonnet? Did each blistered step lead to my love or this vocation? Love and job are intertwined now. Hours spent analyzing your blood, reading studies, making graphs, facing rigorous review. While these seem like important tasks of our relationship, I feel myself reconsidering the best way forward. A louder voice is needed.

No, I'm sure that I should define this love as something bigger than between you and me. Something celestial or geologic. My backyard in Ohio stands on 20 cm of fertility that formed directly from the vitamined rocks left behind during your retreat. Entire nations have food security from soils formed after the ebb of your ice in response to the orbital path of the sun. Before you created our fertile civilization upon which humanity rose, you pressed back and forth. You stayed in sync with the inner engine of our earth, the movement of plates and the weathering of rocks. These things are well studied, your mysteries unveiled.

We are now exhuming buried carbon and pumping it into the sky. The heat trapped is killing so much of you unexpectedly fast. Countless graphs, consensus, movies, documentaries, poets, and problem solvers are pitted against sheer wealth and a lie that there are not other alternatives. This malignance challenges our resilience.

Some of you will not be saved, but I am optimistic that others will. This is the greatest possibility. So much energy is spent by scientists, artists and advocates to understand and speak up for you. The momentum grows. My children Alex (8) and Vivian (6) deserve a planet that will care for them as they care for it. My love for you is the same fabric that covers them.

I head home from this icefield renewed in my commitment to you. I'll be an advocate, a teacher, and someone who keeps you in my heart. I'll fight for you and for us.

Love Always,

Sarah
Goodbye to the Taylor Valley! I'm back in Ohio. This time, returning from the field feels shocking. The U.S. just shut its doors to immigrants from 7 countries and plans to ramp up fossil fuel extraction. Our entrenchment in carbon-burning grows and yet, last year was the first year that green energy jobs surpassed fossil fuels. Some of the worse impacts of climate change have already been felt in places like Syria. But climate change impacts life in Ohio too. My children can't swim in our local reservoir during the late summer when microcystin takes hold in increasingly warm waters. Clean water is central to our economy (recreation, fisheries), but we're fighting a losing battle if we let surface waters continue to warm.

This semester, I'm completely revamping my courses to include evidence-based political advocacy. My global climate change classes will examine climate data and consensus reports and come to their own conclusions on the realities of climate change. An emphasis on problem-solving is key to those planning our climate resilience. So my students will consult with local partners who plan for the consequences of climate change in their work. This includes watershed managers, city stormwater managers, and businesses who seek solutions that are profitable and improve our health. After working with experts student teams will advocate for relevant policies based on the evidence they have examined and partner and personal interests. Along the way, I am already rethinking how I teach students about information sources. It is not enough to have my students explore peer-reviewed literature. They need information on how to evaluate the sources they are actually reading. This teaching module on logical fallacies helps. It is pretty easy to get caught in a loop either on the far-right or far-left where our own ideas are confirmed.

Some key things to reinforce in class: 1) evaluate information critically 2) diversity and openness matter now more than ever. It is time to vocally counteract an image of evil brown people and instead think about removing barriers for people who have the greatest biases against them.

More than ever we need to work across disciplines to combat alternative facts and solve the challenges facing humanity.

She has a generous spirit and has made science in the valleys easy. It was a fantastic day for a helicopter ride and a sampling trip, but we had to hike completely off of the glacier to find water running from the terminus. We both not-so-secretly wished that our ride would not come back and that we would have to hike 10 miles back to camp. There is something about this place that merits walking long distances. It is hard to place.
This has slowed down my search for water on and flowing off of glaciers. Yesterday was partly cloudy and promising so I set out to sample the LaCroix Glacier. A 15 mile round trip... I only walk like this for science.

My plan was to approach the Suess Glacier and to keep walking past it up valley if there was any melt. If one glacier is melting, why not the next? The daily rhythm of glacier melt depends on the circling of the sun, altitude, and the presence of warming soil and rock. I set out knowing my mission might be a failure. But, I also wanted to visit Mummy Pond and retrace my 2001 steps around the north shore. This was a lesson in climate change. The pond formerly known as mummy... Many of the seals I saw more than 15 years ago were completely submerged by the rising lake. No longer photogenic.

While the mummies of my memories are gone, I did get a picture of another mummy near the Suess Glacier. I feel bad because my kids always ask me about the animals I see. Here in the valleys, there is a lot of life if you look closely, or use a microscope. But larger mammals like seals and penguins have traveled the wrong direction from the sea only to die near the false seas (lakes) in this dried up valley.

My LaCroix Glacier water hunt was narrowly a success. I grabbed water just as the glacier was shutting down as the sun moved behind the Asgaard Range. I'm eating homemade biscotti today & stretching.

Lake Hoare Camp, overcast weather doesn't look good for water sampling...

There are only people in camp. Rae, Kathy, & I will enjoy a quiet day. I'm pressing my coffee & considering a 10 mile hike to the LaCroix Glacier to see if any water is flowing off of it (& not just in the stream below). But, it has been fairly overcast a few days & the last glacier surface water missions required that I step onto the glacier & swing a mallet wrapped in plastic at the ice-lidded melt holes & channels. Hiking with a chance of whack-a-mole. Because success is unlikely, I'm considering some other options & I'm taking mascots from my son & daughter's school on a hike to take pictures as the landscape changes. I have 4 polar bears from Snowhill Elementary second grade classrooms & one unicorn from Covenant Children's Academy kindergarten. They have been anxious to get out, but would likely blow away during sampling... but today I will be down in the valley much more than up high. So we are going on an adventure after I press some much needed coffee. Two cups & I'm off!
(aka walking a lot for science)Yesterday's science adventures on the Commonwealth Glacier. Pete, a mountaineer, and I took a long hike to find water on the glacier surface and then we had a helicopter flight to sample the Taylor Glacier today. Success! These samples will be analyzed for trace element concentrations, major ions, & hydrogen & oxygen isotopes in a few months. What are the chemical conditions supporting life on the top of glacier surfaces & what are the chemical contributions of glaciers to the downstream ecosystems?
These pictures are of the Canada Glacier, this week I have been sleeping next to it and taking samples of cryoconite holes (melt that forms around sediment and seals with and icy lid) and streams on the surface. Water chemistry holds clues the ingredients needed to support life on the glacier and downstream. Wild places. Blogging to share. It has been 9 years since my last visited to Taylor Valley, Antarctica. The lakes are rising in response to climate change. Our footsteps along the lake shores erased. The granite still whittling away, the seal bodies still mummifying, the sky still parching rock and skin. My legs can still keep moving miles & miles until the water from glaciers fills my bottles. Their surfaces so strangely beautiful and other-worldly that I wonder if I've gathered Martian tears. And in 24 hours of daylight all things are possible, even a traverse of the Suess Glacier that ends at 10 p.m., or a sneaked peak outside of your tent in the middle of the searingly bright night. Some places stick inside of your memory- always vivid. Endurance is not just motion.
Nice Work!

And I have some new very, very, very, very exciting data from the cornfields that has some implications for the affects of landuse on the carbon cycle. I am dying to bust it out here, but I haven't seen anything similar published to date, so for the moment, I'm like a kid waiting for the tooth fairy... jumping up and down in my seat. I hope I'm not leaking.

And it is back to the cornfields on Monday. I went to the fields and sampled storm runoff from till and no-till plots as well as the forested and mixed landuse sites. It was a rare solo trip because we're approaching the busy season near the end of the quarter at OSU and the undergraduates all have exams to study for and reports to turn in. The cornfields were far muddier than the forested sites and I suspect filtering those samples might take a while. I had a fun time getting the truck up one of the valleys and stayed in 4wd most of the day. From Friday's storm it is evident that much carbon is lost from plowed landscapes..., but I really have no idea what to expect in terms of soil respiration. It doesn't seem that much could be living and breathing in the cornfield or even the other plots right now. Temperatures have dropped from 50 F to 10 F today and won't be much warmer tomorrow. Carla and I will head back to the fields tomorrow to hook the Licor up at our plots and see what baseline respiration is...pretty soon those plots will move from near flatline to robust exhaling.

At any rate, on Saturday I went to COSI the Columbus Center of Science and Industry with Rachel Hinz and we led a group of 30 8th grade girls in flubber explorations. They modeled glacier flow. Flubber is a mesmerizing glue substance that flows viscously and shares some properties with glaciers... although as the girls noticed, flubber doe not melt. After this, I flew down the stairs to give a brief slide show of Antarctic travels to a group of 3 to 50 year olds... my slide show followed an explosion set off to draw listeners in... I have to say COSI knows how to draw a crowd. I may have to begin all my talks with a loud clang and some smoke.

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-19681085896641851202009-01-08T14:53:00.007-05:002009-01-20T20:07:48.208-05:00Hobbies other than science? The snow blazes down and fizzles out on our Ohio pavement and fieldwork feels distant. During this season, my poor schnauzer is skittish on the ice and our walks grow shorter. As gray blankets us, I miss the aesthetic aspects of being in the field. And when not working, I find myself reading dark literature until I get into a funk and become one with my couch.

And now, I'm attempting new hobbies; pretty and far away from writing manuscripts or proposalling. Today, I officially enrolled in an evening watercolor class at the Columbus Arts Council. This blog is primarily focused on science capades, but the awescapes I've been fortunate to visit trigger a gut need to do something artistic. For the rest of the winter, I shall stay away from sad literature. That being said, if you want a good couch cry read "The Blinding Absence of Light". It's even sadder than "Blindness" and "The Road".Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-90352222610395344642009-01-06T14:13:00.003-05:002009-01-06T14:19:05.385-05:00Flood Year!!!Rumor has it that this is a big water year in the Taylor Valley Antarctica! Similar to the 2001-2002 season during my first trip south. Hearing about it makes me think of the teal ponded water on the glacier surface and the gush of water pouring from Canada Glacier near my tent. It will be exciting to see what experiments will be conducted this year now that there has been more thought as to how "floods" change the landscape, geochemistry, and biotic activity in this most unusual polar desert!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-60662417985529435002009-01-02T08:36:00.003-05:002009-01-02T08:45:40.246-05:00Freeze-thaw-freeze
Carla and I have been sampling several times now. Each time, my fingers are becoming more solid as the air temperatures drop. To prevent the loss of sensation in my fingers, I put on layer after layer of clothing, which makes me fumble with the bottles more. Fortunately, Carla is much more dexterous than me.

We have also analyzed many of the samples we collected as well as some from storm events that the USDA collected for us. Most of all, I'm happy that we were able to get the pvc soil collars into the ground last week before the ground became to solid to pound them into the ground. Now, we are ready to use the Licor to measure the breath of the earth, or the carbon dioxide emitted from the different land use types. I marked our locations with flags... it seems that we are overdue for a big Ohio snowfall. However, I suspect we may have a good snow free day in January to make our first measurements.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-75956262282819733812008-12-16T23:27:00.002-05:002008-12-16T23:34:07.192-05:00Meeting and MinglingI'm at an International meeting in San Francisco with other earth scientists... the turnout is amazing. We overfill the escalators and spill out of the lecture halls. There is no shortage of meaningful & inspiring discussions. Also, because the meeting is broad in scope, I've run into friends and mentors from times past. Admittedly, I am exhausted now, but can't wait to do it again tomorrow.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-30080043564768492752008-11-24T19:31:00.004-05:002008-12-05T16:42:14.045-05:00Proposaling: dreaming or reality?

A few people have asked, where does the money to do earth science come from? If you have good hypotheses- that are important beyond your immediate peers, and propose tests that will support those hypotheses... sometimes, the government will give you money... there are also other ways, private sponsorship, lottery winnings (similar to being a student on a really cool funded project) but in the Byrd Polar Research Center and other research centers across the USA proposals are written to the National Science Foundation.

I submitted one with Bryan and Jeff and attempt to answer some questions from our previous work in Peru. Why? Most tropical glacier melt is routed through wetlands where potentially toxic metals are rapidly added to streams... people are reliant on this water, water quantity is rapidly changing as glaciers recede. Will issues with water quality precede water quantity issues? Will these issues be worse in the dry season with more variable stream flow? (stream flow is buffered by glacial inputs). At any rate, the water is blood red now (above).... Will it turn neon upon the death of tropical glaciers? Also, think of all the cool things to do with students.

Michael and Carla are already calculating dry season weathering rates- but the wet season is unknown...Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-39300070100779653052008-11-18T17:29:00.003-05:002008-11-18T17:39:53.147-05:00Snow in the fields

Carla and I went out to Coshocton fora round of sampling and a holiday meal with the USDA folks. The next trip is in just less than 2 weeks. Carla, an Earth Sciences undergrad, is going to come out with me to sample and set up the Licor (measures CO2 respiration from the soil). She will be completing her undergraduate thesis working with me (Thanks Berry!). She'll examine alkalinity (or the inorganic carbon flux) associated with different landuse types we are examining: forested, corn till, corn no till, mixed, and unimproved pasture. She is also planning to compare this with samples gathered from Peru this summer. It should be an interesting study because both glacial and agricultural watersheds have high erosion rates.

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-27366329919730209952008-11-04T09:19:00.003-05:002008-11-04T09:35:20.459-05:00Thank youHere's a picture of my dissertation defense committee: Anne Carey, Berry Lyons, me, Bryan Mark, and Lonnie Thompson. It was a good road to my PhD with their input and support. (And the support of Andrew Fountain who served on my dissertation committee). Recently, I had the chance to thank my adviser, Berry, for making my Antarctic dream possible. As I move forward leading my own research endeavors, I hope that I am able to give back as much as I have received. A high school student and an undergraduate (now anonymous, but not for long) will be joining me heading out to Coshocton in the quest to understand the link between agricultural practices and the storage and loss of carbon from soil. But, I can't help but think of the cornfields high in the Andes, hanging from the sides of mountains. I'm looking at this landscape wondering how many hours of manually tilling and toiling would be needed to grow an acre of corn? And what is the rapid increase of temperatures at high altitudes and human industrial spewing of nitrate doing to those fields now.....???Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-87716856283131728342008-10-01T10:42:00.004-05:002008-10-07T08:09:47.990-05:00Welch Crag
Yesterday my good friend, Kathy Welch, learned she had a crag named after her! (After she won a service award at Byrd Polar Research Center).

Welch Crag: 77°17'08"S Latitude, 160°36'37"E Longitude. A steep rugged peak, which is marked by secondary spires rising to 1500 m in the north-east part of McSaveney Spur, Willett Range, Victoria Land. Topographic Map: Webb Lake (1:50,000).

Here's to Kathy! She'll be blogging from the Antarctic soon in her 16th field season!

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18773312.post-32974302109712461152008-09-27T06:49:00.003-05:002008-09-28T07:35:11.636-05:00Till, no till, here we come!Monday, I went out to the field with Andrea Grottoli so that we could get on the same page with our sampling effort. We're both transferring skills from different research arenas (glacier melt- me, and coral chemistry- Andrea) to understanding carbon storage in the pastures and cornfields of central Ohio. Andrea is very pregnant and wanted to make sure that her research tech/postdoc, Yohei new where to sample come mid-October.

The Peruvian side project is going well, I'm drafting a paper on the craziest metal concentrations ever observed in glacial melt .... and will get the draft and remaining data to Jeff and crew by the end of the year. The success of the Peruvian project is mostly due to the efforts of 2 undergraduates and now, 1 high school student (They are so good!!!!)Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04486603316507294586noreply@blogger.com0
